History


The land and area now known today as Harker Heights was once owned by Pinckney R. Cox and Harley Kern. The city was named after Harley Kern. In 1957 the land was subdivided and sold in lots. Over time the area was incorporated and on September 24, 1960, Pinckney R. Cox became the first mayor.

Harker Heights is located near one of the major U.S. army bases, Fort Hood. The base was made a permanent facility in 1950. Consequently, since that time, the military population in the area grew, as did the population of the overall area.

Many of the homes for sale in Harker Heights end up being homes for military families. However, no matter whether you're enrolled in the military or not, you can find many benefits to living in Harker Heights.
